One of the things that makes the US Open a special event is that in addition to awarding normal flights of beers, the Carolina Brewmasters have teamed up with two other breweries for special category selections and special awards. One of those is known as the Rein Stein, which is sponsored by Olde Mecklenburg Brewery in Charlotte. Another award that is special to the US Open is the Gambrinus Cup award. Like the Rein Stein, this award is chosen from a pre-determined style of beer. The chosen style this year, while not yet an offical BJCP style....YET, was American Black Ale. Commonly known as Cascadian Dark Ale or Black IPA. This award is sponsored by Winston-Salem based Foothills Brewing. The winning beer from the chosen category will be brewed on Foothills commercial brewing system specifically for the North Carolina

Thank you to all of the attendees of the 2011 Summertime Brews Festival at the Greensboro Coliseum on July 16 that tasted our brews. We brought our best, tastiest and strangest brews that we could find and from where we stood, everyone had a great time.
HOPS had beer from pretty much all walks of life. A Pineapple and Jalapeno Wheat beer, Peanut Butter Cup Stout, Carrot Wheat, Almond Joy Porter and even a Peanut Butter and Jelly golden ale. Who can resist such diversity?
